Self Textploration - Hyperlink Adventure
This project is a simple first person, hypertext “choose your own adventure” interactive artwork that uses conceptual gaming practices to challenge the way users think about the role of interpersonal relationships in crafting an identity. The goal of this piece was to place the user into the role of themselves as they navigate through several seemingly ordinary conversations with people in their life. The target audience was older high school and college students who might be going through a transitional period, questioning their expression of identity, their personal relationships, their uncertain future, and how these are interconnected. Self Textploration is designed to be a method of personal reflection on these issues through several guided conversations which prompt the user to think deeply about themselves without the added pressure of having their answers dissected and judged by a real person. The Game Design Document can be found here.
This text-based game was created for a Digital Narratives class at UChicago with the help of two collaborators (Ariela Subar and Ethan Stockwell). I used Twine to ease the web design process but wrote the scripts myself, reformatted the Twine structure; I also wrote dialogue for two characters, and helped stage, take, and edit the photographs.
